Our Community Living residences are very special homes. For many of the individuals who live in them, they are the first and only homes they have known since leaving the stark institutionalized environment they experienced for decades at the Woodlands School. Our residences have become more than just a means for the individuals' inclusion in the community, they also represent a commitment to their right to a comfortable, safe and nurturing home.
GVCSS has always gone above and beyond to maintain this commitment by creating warm homes that incorporate the individuals’ personalities, from customized bedroom wall murals to framed portraits. Each of our six homes is located in a residential neighbourhood, close to parks and shops. Inside, the individuals enjoy family-style living: meals are shared, and special occasions like birthdays and Christmas are celebrated together.
We are very proud of our Community Living homes and we are grateful for the funding we receive to keep them in operation. However, as all homeowners know, home improvements and repairs can be ongoing and costly necessities. Unfortunately, the cost for these demands exceeds our program funding and we must turn to our supporters for assistance.
This year, we have prioritized home improvements at one of our North Shore-based homes. All flooring at our Coleman Street home must be replaced due to wear and tear over the past 30 years. We have targeted $50,000 for this project.
GVCSS welcomes all donations to help keep our homes in excellent condition, including donations in-kind.
